Behnam emphasized that the CFTC is responsible for protecting American investors in commodity financial asset markets, and many of these cryptocurrencies are considered commodities. He mentioned that BTC and ETH are commodities, and the introduction of BTC and ETH futures on exchanges is driven by market demand and supported by legal analysis. Behnam highlighted the lack of a central coordinating entity or common enterprise as the reason why cryptocurrencies and other commodities are not classified as securities.

Yesterday, BTC declined from $27,500 to $26,300. Today, it opened at $26,800 and has been consolidating above the EMA90, indicating a period of accumulation. The MACD and EMA have formed a divergence pattern, while trading volume is decreasing during the upward movement. The KDJ indicator is expanding upward, suggesting bullish momentum. However, the BTC price is facing resistance at the EMA90, and the Bollinger Bands are widening downward. The immediate support level is around $26,000, while the resistance level has dropped to $27,500. Given the prevailing bearish sentiment, caution is advised in trading decisions.

A spokesperson confirmed that FTX donations to support the campaign of Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican candidate in Ohio, were also turned over. Multiple reports indicate that Representatives Marc Molinaro (R-NY), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Penn.) have also surrendered FTX-related donations to US law enforcement.

BTC showed a weaker performance compared to ETH in the past few days. After a failed rebound attempt, BTC started oscillating downwards following a peak near $27,200. It then entered a range-bound phase, touching the lower boundary of the previous range in the evening. In the early hours, it experienced an upward oscillation, reaching around $27,500. The key question now is whether BTC can break through the $27,500 level and potentially test $28,000. Otherwise, further oscillation is likely. The market remains in a state of uncertainty, suggesting cautious trading within the range until a breakout occurs.

Lightning Labs, the developer behind the Bitcoin Lightning Network, has announced the release of Taproot Assets v0.2 (formerly known as Taro). This scalable protocol enables the issuance of assets on both the Bitcoin blockchain and Lightning Network. The v0.2 version provides a set of core functionalities for developers looking to publish, send, receive, and discover assets on the Bitcoin blockchain. These features are currently being tested on the testnet, with mainnet support expected to follow soon. Lightning Labs plans to submit the finalised Taproot asset specification as an official BIP series to the community, merge the Taproot channel, release a BLIP describing Lightning Network feature additions, and eventually launch the first testnet Taproot asset payment channels on the Lightning Network.

According to Tether’s Q1 report, the issuance of USDT increased from $66 billion to over $82 billion. The percentage of secured loans in Tether’s reserves decreased from 8.7% to 6.5%, while holdings of US Treasury bonds reached a historic high of over $53 billion, representing over 64% of total reserves. Cash and cash equivalents, including overnight and term repurchase agreements, money market funds, cash, and bank deposits, reached a historical high of nearly 85%. Tether also reduced its bank deposits by over 90% to $481 million to reduce counterparty risk.

Yesterday, BTC’s overall trend was weak, and it continued to oscillate around a range. On the four-hour chart, the Bollinger Bands are gradually narrowing upwards, with prices steadily rising and finding support at the midline. On the hourly chart, the Bollinger Bands are expanding, with the price fluctuating between the midline and the lower band. MACD and the short-term bearish trend are weakening, while KDJ is indicating upward momentum. Daily traders may want to observe market developments before making decisions.

BTC maintained a narrow range of fluctuation, while ETH saw a slight upward movement, but failed to sustain the momentum. The market remained stagnant with no significant changes, showing weak upward or downward trends. On the daily chart, the morning candlestick signalled a possible bottoming out and the downward trend has been eased. The market is expected to undergo further consolidation and recovery, with a potential for new changes in the near future.

US House Financial Services Committee Chairman Patrick McHenry and Digital Assets, Fintech, and Inclusion Subcommittee Chair French Hill have written a comment letter to the SEC, calling for the withdrawal of proposed crypto custody rules. The lawmakers argue that the proposed rules go beyond the Commission’s statutory authority and would prevent firms from serving as qualified custodians for registered investment advisers. This follows similar concerns expressed by a16z and the Blockchain Association. The lawmakers are urging the SEC to withdraw its proposal and comply with its statutory mandate.

BTC’s 4-hour structure shows a possible final leg down, with the potential for a bullish divergence. The overall trend is still skewed to the downside, with increasing risk levels. Key support lies in the 26,500–25,500 range, with a break below 25,000 potentially leading to a return to the previous daily consolidation zone. The longer-term outlook is uncertain, with the possibility of revisiting the 20,000 level.

PayPal has disclosed in its 10-Q filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission that it holds nearly $1 billion worth of cryptocurrency on its balance sheet. The assets include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin, held on behalf of its customers, with a total value of $943 million. The company does not hold any cryptocurrency on its balance sheet outside of its customers’ assets.

Bitcoin’s daily candlestick chart shows a period of consolidation at lower levels, with the key support level of around 27250 being tested repeatedly. Whether this support level can hold or not remains to be seen.
